Introduction 

Nine (9) universities exist in Kano State, of which two (2) belong to the federal government, two (2) belong to the state government and five (5) are privately owned.

Kano is the capital of Kano State and is located in northern Nigeria. Kano is Nigeria’s second-largest city, behind Lagos, with over four million people living in a 449-square-kilometer area. Located in the Savanna, south of the Sahel, Kano is a significant trans-Saharan commerce route.

There are two (2) Federal Universities in Kano State, they are ;

Bayero University, Kano

The Ahmadu Bello College, founded in 1960 and housed within the School for Arabic Studies (SAS) in Kano’s old city, was the forerunner of Bayero University Kano. It was renamed Abdullahi Bayero College when Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, was established in 1962. It moved to a temporary location at the former Kano Airport Hotel in 1964, enrolling its first ten undergraduate students to Ahmadu Bello University’s B.A. degree program. The Federal Government upgraded all university colleges in the country to full universities in 1977, and Abdullahi Bayero University College became Bayero University, Kano (BUK) (backed by the promulgation of BUK Decree no 79 of 1979). Dr. Mahmud Tukur, the Principal of the University College, became the institution’s first Vice-Chancellor (1977-78), heading the team that established the groundwork and started the process that led to the current permanent site and the current design of the university.

Admission Requirements for Bayero University, Kano

Before they are considered eligible in subjects relevant to the program applied for, prospective applicants must have taken the UTME Examinations, applied for a course at Bayero University, Kano, and scored an aggregate established by the university.

In not more than two (2) sittings, prospective candidates must have obtained a minimum of five (5) passes at credit level in the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE or Equivalent) administered by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) or the National Examinations Council (NECO), including a pass at credit level in both English and Mathematics, as well as other subjects related to the candidate’s chosen field of study. They would thereafter be needed to enroll and take a post-UTME examination conducted by the University.

Nigeria Police Academy Wudil

The Nigeria Police Academy (NPA) is a federal university in Nigeria, with its headquarters in Wudil, Kano State. The Nigeria Police Academy Wudil in Kano State was upgraded to a degree-awarding school by the Federal Government of Nigeria in 2012, and the National Universities Commission (NUC) acknowledged the Academy as the 37th Federal University and the 124th University in Nigeria as a result.

Admission requirements for Nigeria Police Academy, Wudil

The following are the prerequisites for admission:

  • Candidates for admission to the Academy must be Nigerian residents, between the ages of 17 and 22, and have a height of at least 1.67 meters (5 feet 6 inches) for males and 1.62 meters (5 feet 4 inches) for females. Male candidates must also have an increased chest size of at least 86cm (34 Inches for those between 21 and 22 years of age). Any physical deformity or mental handicap must be absent in all candidates.
  • Candidates must have received a minimum of SIX (6) credits in not more than two sittings of the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) administered by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), the National Examinations Council (NECO), or the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB). Candidates must also have a credit pass in English Language and Mathematics, as well as other disciplines relevant to their Academy course of study.
  • Candidates must also complete physical and psychological fitness exams and receive satisfactory grades on both the written and oral examinations.

The process of establishing Kano University of Science and Technology (KUST) Wudil began in 1973, during the administration of the first Military Governor and Police Commissioner, Late Alhaji Audu Bako, when Justice Sani Aikawa’s Committee was formed to advise the government on how the state could own a university that could meet manpower needs.

The objective of Kano University of Science and Technology, Wudil, is to develop a highly skilled workforce to tackle the problems of a rapidly changing world through research and training.

Requirements to gain admission to Kano State University of Science and Technology

Admission to the Kano State University of Science and Technology (KUST) Undergraduate Program is based on one of two entry methods: UTME or Direct Entry.

UTME requirements for Kano State University of Science and Technology (KUST) admission

UTME candidates must achieve the following conditions in order to be admitted to Kano University of Science and Technology :

  • Candidates must be up to the age of 16 years old.
  • Candidates must have at least 6 credits in their O’level results (s). This must include English Language, Mathematics, and three other subjects relevant to their program.
  • Candidates must score up to 160 in JAMB UTME exam.
  • Candidates must take the KUST post-UTME screening examination and perform very well in it (Depending on the course of study).
  • For admission to Kano University of Science and Technology (KUST), only ONE sitting result is acceptable.The right subject combination must be chosen for their courses.
  • Lastly, candidates must achieve the required cutoff marks for their courses in order to be admitted.
KUST Direct Entry Admissions Requirements

Candidates who seek to enter Kano University of Science and Technology (KUST) through direct entry must complete the following requirements:

  • Candidates must have a minimum of five (5) credits in their O’level results to be considered. This must include English as a second language as well as math. Two sitting results, on the other hand, are not permitted.
  • Applicants should be up to 16 years old.
  • To apply, candidates must obtain a JAMB Direct entry form from JAMB.
  • Applicants must own one or more of the following certificates: OND, NCE, Cambridge A level, IJMB, HND, BSc, ICAN.

Yusuf Maitama Sule University Kano

Yusuf Maitama Sule University is a Kano State Government-owned university with two campuses, one in the city center and the other on Muhammadu Buhari Way along the Kofar Kabuga – Kofar Ruwa Road in Kano State, Nigeria.

  • Applicants must have five credits in SSCE/GCE or its equivalent in not more than two sittings.
  • The four programs in the Faculty of Arts, Social and Management Science (Accounting, Taxation Economics, and Entrepreneurship Studies) each require five O’level credits in Mathematics, English, Economics, Accounting/Financial Accounting, and any other social science topic.
  • Five O’level credits in English IRS/IRK and any other three arts/social science topics are required for a B.A. in Islamic Studies; an O’level credit in Arabic is an added advantage.
  • The Faculty of Science and Computing and the Faculty of Basic Health Science both require five O’level credits in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, and English for admission to their programs.
