There are seven(7) universities in Ondo State of which one(1) is a Federal University, three(3) are State-owned Universities and three(3) are private Universities.

Ondo State is a Southwest Nigerian state. It was derived from the former Western State on February 3, 1976. In addition to the Atlantic Ocean, Ondo State shares boundaries with the following states: Ekiti State (once a part of the state), Kogi State, Edo State, Delta State, Ogun State, Southwest, Osun State, and the East. Akure, which formerly served as the seat of the legendary Akure Kingdom, is the state’s capital. Near the Bights of Benin, Ondo State is a mangrove-swamp forest.

Federal University in Ondo State

As mentioned above, there is only one University in Ondo State, which is;

Federal University of Technology, Akure

The Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) is one of Nigeria’s top technology universities and truly the pride of the country. Since its founding in 1981, the university has expanded significantly, distributing its research and academic specialties among eight different schools and more than fifty academic departments.

The objective of the university is to progress technology by creating an environment that is favorable for research, teaching, and learning and encourages the creation of technologically focused, independent, and socially relevant products.

Admission Requirements for Federal University of Technology, Akure

Admission requirements for enrollment in the degree program through the UTME
  • English language, mathematics, chemistry, and physics are required for the UTME.
  • English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, and Biology or Agricultural Science are required for five Credit level passes at no more than two sittings for the Senior Secondary School Certificate.
Requirements for Direct Entry
  • In addition to the above-mentioned basic requirements for the Senior Secondary School Certificate, the following may also be taken into account:
  • Two A’ Level passes in mathematics, chemistry, or physics with a minimum grade of C;
  • A National Diploma in Computer Science with at least an Upper Credit pass from an accredited Polytechnic or its equivalent, or an NCE with at least a Credit pass in both Computer Science and Mathematics, Computer Science and Physics, or Mathematics and Physics.

State Universities in Ondo State

As stated above, there are three(3) state Universities in Ondo State, which will be discussed in detail below;

Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba

The government of the former Ondo State, led by the late Chief Adekunle Ajasin, first created Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba in March 1982 as Obafemi Awolowo University.

Ondo State University became the name of the military administration that succeeded Navy Commodore Bamidele Otiko in 1985. Its move to Akungba-Akoko in the new Ondo State became necessary in 1999 after the old Ondo was divided into a new State three years earlier in October 1996. A group of workers moved from the former site in Ado-Ekiti to Akungba-Akoko on December 1, 1999, after the bill supporting the transfer was passed into law by Chief Adebayo Adefarati, the State’s then-governor, in November 1999.

Admission Requirements for Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba

The UTME entry and the Direct Entry are the two main entry methods for enrolling in an undergraduate program at AAUA.

UTME criteria for AAUA admission
  • Candidates for the Adekunle Ajasin University’s UTME program must fulfill the following criteria to be admitted:
  • A minimum of 6 (six) “Cs (Credits)” marks are required for candidates’ O’level results (s). English language, math, and three other topics pertinent to their area of study must be included.
  • Candidates must obtain a minimum score of 180 on the JAMB UTME.
  • Candidates need to perform very well on the AAUA post-UTME screening exam, which they must take (Depending on the course of study)
  • Adekunle Ajasin University (AAUA) only accepts results from ONE sitting.
  • For their courses, candidates must select the appropriate subject combination.
  • Finally, to be admitted to the institution, applicants must achieve the required cutoff scores for their respective courses.
Direct Entry entrance requirements for Adekunle Ajasin University
  • Candidates must fulfill the following criteria to be admitted directly to Adekunle Ajasin University (AAUA):
  • The minimum number of credits a candidate must have in their O-level score is five (5). Mathematics and English are both required in this. Two sitting results are not permitted, nevertheless.
  • To apply, candidates must obtain a JAMB Direct entry form from JAMB.
  • The following credentials are required for candidates: OND, ND, NCE, IJMB, Cambridge A level, BSc, HND, or ICAN.

Ondo State University of Science and Technology Okitipupa

The Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology (OAUSTECH), formerly known as the Ondo State University of Science and Technology (OSUSTech), is a state-owned institution of higher learning with its main campus in Okitipupa, Ondo State, Nigeria. As one of Nigeria’s top 10 state-owned universities in 2021, the university was ranked ninth by the National University Commission (NUC).

Under the direction of Dr. Olusegun Agagu, the Ondo State Government founded OSUSTECH in 2008. The university started its academic operations in January 2011 and presently provides several study programs under the Faculty of Science. Two new colleges, the Faculty of Agriculture & Agricultural Technology and the Faculty of Engineering and Engineering Technology, respectively, were established in 2017.

The current vice-chancellor is Prof. Sunday Roberts Ogunduyile.

Admission requirements for Ondo State University of Science and Technology

  • For the first-degree program at Ondo State University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa, prospective students must have obtained at least five credit passes in one sitting in English Language and Mathematics as well as WAEC, GCE, or NECO. Prospective applicants are admitted into the University’s various degree programs at the 100 level through the UTME.
  • Candidates for Direct Entry must have five passes at the credit level in WAEC, GCE, or NECO, including English Language and Mathematics, at one (1) sitting, in addition to having at least two Advanced Level passes in pertinent science courses. Candidates must also meet the departmental entry requirements.

Ondo State University of Medical Sciences

The University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo, Ondo State, was founded in 2014 to foster excellence in teaching, research, and service delivery in all health-related science disciplines. It is the first specialized medical and health sciences university in Nigeria. Since its founding, the University has carved out a special place for itself as one of the few public institutions with a reliable, unbroken academic schedule and extraordinarily high standards for educational delivery.

Admission Requirements for Ondo State University of Medical Sciences

  • Any UNIMED program requires a minimum overall aggregate score of 50% for candidates to be admitted.
  • Except for candidates in mathematics, all courses in faculties require English Language, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology in the UTME. For those candidates, English Language, Physics, Chemistry, and either Mathematics or Biology are required subjects.

Private Universities in Ondo State

There are three(3) Private Universities in Ondo State, which are;

Achievers University, Owo

On April 2, 2008, Achievers University officially opened for business. Eight sets of alumni who regularly engaged in the National Youth Service (NYSC) program graduated during this time, while the university welcomed students for 12 academic sessions. The university’s objective is to create a supportive environment, both physically and intellectually, for the development of qualified graduates who will be independent, highly productive, and globally relevant in every area of human activity.

Admission Requirements for Achievers University

  • Candidates must have passed the UTME (Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination) in 2021 with a minimum score that has been approved by JAMB.
  • Achievers University’s cutoff mark is 140.
  • Additionally, candidates must pass at least five credits in no more than two sittings of WAEC (SSCE), NECO (SSCE), or NABTEB. English language, math, and three additional topics that are pertinent to the suggested course of study should be included.

Elizade University, Ilara-Mokin

Elizade University was launched in January 2013 with 64 students, 13 programs, and two faculties. Since then, the university has seen a geometric increase in all areas. With approximately 1,500 students enrolled in the 2020–2021 academic session, the university had twenty-five (25) fully accredited programs in the faculties of basic and applied sciences, engineering, humanities, social and management sciences, and law at the time of the mid-term review of the university’s quick progress. 

Seven (7) more undergraduate programs have been launched by the university. These include political science, sociology, nursing science, medical laboratory science, architecture, quantity surveying, and estate management. In addition, the National Universities Commission (NUC) has granted the university permission to conduct 15 Postgraduate programs at the M.Sc. and Ph.D. levels.

Admission Requirements for Elizade University

UTME Requirements
  • All applicants to ELIZADE University must have earned credit-level passes in five (5) pertinent courses from the SSCE, GCE, O’Level, NECO, or NABTEB, or its equivalents, including English Language and Mathematics, in no more than two sittings.
  • All applicants to ELIZADE University must have taken the UTME administered by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and achieved the minimum pass-mark specified by the JAMB.
 Requirements to gain Admission for Direct Entry to 200 Level:
  •  Five relevant credit passes at WASC (SSCE), NECO (SSCE), NABTEB, or equivalent in pertinent subjects, two of which must be at “A” Level.
  • NCE at credit level or an OND with Upper Credit from any university-approved institution.
  • A diploma from another reputable university.

Wesley University of Science & Technology, Ondo

Methodist Church Nigeria is the institution that owns Wesley University, Ondo. On May 17, 2007, the National Universities Commission (NUC) issued the University its formal license. Because of this, the University’s official opening ceremony was held on May 14 at its Ondo town location, and full academic activity started in October 2008 with the admission and resumption of the University’s pioneer students. 

The university works to provide an atmosphere that is conducive to successful instruction and research in cutting-edge science and technology for sustainable development. How much is Adekunle Ajasin School fees?
