There are four universities in Kogi State, of which one (1) belongs to the federal government, two (2) belong to the state government and one (1) is privately owned.

Kogi State is located in Nigeria’s North Central region, bordered on the east by the states of Ekiti and Kwara, on the north by the Federal Capital Territory, on the northeast by Nasarawa State, on the northwest by Niger State, on the southwest by the states of Edo and Ondo, on the southeast by the states of Anambra and Enugu, and on the west by Benue State, which is Nigeria’s only state that borders ten other states. 

Kogi State was founded on August 27, 1991, from sections of Benue, Niger, and Kwara states. It was named after the Hausa word for river, kogi. The state is known as the “Confluence State” because of the river Niger’s confluence with the Niger River Benue occurs next to its capital, Lokoja.

On the 16th of February 2011, former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan announced the establishment of the Federal University Lokoja, along with eight other new Federal universities. The University is located in Lokoja, Nigeria’s capital city and the capital of Kogi State, in the country’s North Central political zone. The university’s objective is to be the best among the nine newly founded Federal institutions in Nigeria in 2011, as well as one of Africa’s top ten universities. 

The university’s aim is to prepare employable graduates for the catchment region, Africa, and the world through competency-based education, applied research, and practical community service. The university offers both Undergraduate and Postgraduate programs.

Admission Requirements for Federal University, Lokoja

Admission to a Federal University, Lokoja Undergraduate Program is based on one of two entry methods: UTME or Direct Entry.

The UTME requirement for Federal University of Lokoja.
  • Applicants must have a minimum of five “Cs (Credits)” in their O’level results (s). which must include Mathematics, English Language, and three other topics relevant to their program. 
  • Candidates must have a minimum score of 180 on the JAMB UTME exam.
  • Candidates must take the FUL post-UTME screening examination and perform exceptionally well (depending on the degree of study).
  • For admission to the Federal University of Lokoja (FUL), only ONE sitting result is acceptable. Candidates must choose the correct subject combination for their courses.
  • In order to gain admission into the university, candidates must achieve the required cutoff marks for their courses.
Requirements for Direct Entry admission into Federal University of Lokoja
  • Candidates who seek to enter the Federal University of Lokoja (FUL) through direct entry must complete the following requirements:
  • Candidates must have a minimum of five (5) credits in their O’level results to be considered. It should  include English as a second language alongside math. Two sitting results, on the other hand, are not permitted.
  • To apply, candidates must obtain a JAMB Directly entrance form from JAMB.
  • Applicants must have one or more of the following certificates: Cambridge, OND, ND, NCE, IJMB ICAN, A level, BSc, HND

State Universities in Kogi State

There are two state universities in Kogi state; Kogi State University Anyigba and Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH), Osara.

Kogi State University Anyigba

Kogi State University is the state-owned university of Kogi, Nigeria, and is located in Anyigba. It was founded in 1999 by Prince Abubakar Audu, the state’s previous governor. It was originally known as Kogi State University, but in 2002 it was renamed Prince Abubakar Audu University (PAAU), and in 2003 it was renamed Kogi State University (KSU).

In April 2000, Kogi State University opened its doors to students with six faculties: Agriculture, Arts and Humanities, Law, Management Sciences, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences. The institution added the Faculty of Medicine, which includes large office and laboratory complexes.

The vice chancellor of Kogi State University is Professor Marietu Ohunene Tenuche. They offer both Undergraduate and Postgraduate programs.

The following are the requirements for individuals seeking admission to KSU via JAMB (UTME):

  • Candidates must have 5 credits in either SSCE/GCE in a maximum of two sittings.
  • The appropriate JAMB subject combination related to the course must be chosen.
  • To be admitted to Kogi State University, candidates must score at least 160 in the recently concluded JAMB UTME examination.

Candidates who intend to apply for admission to Kogi State University through Direct Entry must meet the following requirements:

  • Other qualities that are acceptable to the University Senate and are equivalent to (a) and (b) above. Candidates must additionally meet any Faculty/Departmental entry requirements in addition to the aforesaid minimum admission requirements.
  • Degree in related fields (First Class/Second Class Upper).
  • Candidates for direct entry must acquire a KSU Direct Entry form from the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and the KSU Portal.
  • Candidates should have passed the National Certificate of Education (NCE), National Diploma (ND), and other Advanced Level Certificates with a minimum of Merit.

Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH), Osara

His Excellency, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, the Executive Governor of Kogi State, is the brain behind Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH) Osara. The dream arose from a deep desire to relieve inhabitants of Kogi State who are familiar with the process of admission into Nigerian universities; for example, secondary school graduates desiring to pursue jobs in science and technology-related specializations. On November 10th, 2020, Confluence Institution of Science and Technology Osara, a state-owned university in Kogi State, Nigeria, was created. It’s around 19 kilometers from Lokoja on the Okene-Kabba route. In the year 2020, the institution began operations in Lokoja.

Engr.Prof.Salawu Sadiku is the Vice-Chancellor of Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH), Osara.

Salem University, Lokoja
