There are eleven (11) Universities in Lagos of which two (2) are owned by the Federal Government, three (3) are State owned and six (6) are Private Universities.
Lagos State is a Nigerian state in the southwest. It is both the most populated and the smallest of the 36 states in terms of area. The state was founded on May 27, 1967, from the Western Region and the previous Federal Capital Territory, and is named after Lagos, Africa’s most populated city.

National open University of Nigeria
The National Universities Commission (NUC), the Nigerian government’s regulatory agency for all universities, first raised the idea of an Open University in 1976. During the Fourth National Development Plan, the NUC, then led by Prof. Jubril Aminu as Executive Secretary (1975-1979), sent a memo to the Federal Military Government recommending the establishment of an autonomous Open University for Nigeria (1981-1985). This was recognized by the federal government, and the concept was later included in the National Policy on Education in 1977.
As it stands now, the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has established itself as a premier ODL institution in Africa, delivering functional, flexible, accessible, and cost-effective education to all who desire knowledge. It now has 78 Study Centers dispersed across the country’s six geopolitical zones. There are currently around 500 thousand students enrolled in the university.

Admission Requirements for National open University (NOUN)
Requirements for Undergraduate programs.
- A minimum of 5 O-level credits, including English Language and Mathematics, is usually required for undergraduate entrance at NOUN.
- Some programs may have additional criteria, which can be found after selecting the Program and entry level on the Faculty’s admission website.
- To apply for a program, go to the Faculty page, choose the program, and make sure the View Requirement button is turned on. By clicking this button, the matching entry requirement will be revealed, and the Apply button on the prepayment application page will be enabled.
- Before submitting, fill in all of the remaining information on the page.
- After submitting the pre-payment form successfully, you will be led to Remita to acquire an RRR invoice, which should be used to make payment for the application form.
- When an applicant pays online with a credit card, the online form is automatically generated, which must be completed before submission.
- Applicants who pay in person at a bank branch must select “Continue After Payment” and provide their Unique ID and RRR information. They are also given the option of changing the program for which they applied.
- Candidates who paid with an RRR generated previous semester or earlier must do the application procedure again until they reach the remita page. When they click Proceed after payment, they should now use the newly produced UniqueID together with the previous RRR that was used for payment.
- When the payment is successful, it will then develop an online application form, which should be completed before it is submitted online. The acceptance process is automated and the outcome is virtually instantaneous!
Requirements for Postgraduate programs
- Applicants must fulfill all matriculation criteria of at least five (5) credit passes, including English Language and Mathematics, to qualify for admission into any of the University’s postgraduate programs. Some programs require a passing grade in mathematics.
- Candidates for Postgraduate Diploma Programs must have either a Bachelor’s Degree in any discipline from a NOUN Senate-approved university OR a Higher National Diploma with a minimum of Lower Credit. The candidate for the Postgraduate Diploma in Legislative Drafting must have been admitted to the bar. Candidates having professional certifications such as ACA, ACIS, ACIB, ACII, ACIA, and others may also be considered for admission to the school of Business and Human Resource Management Postgraduate Diploma programs.
- Candidates for Master’s degree programs must have either a Bachelor’s degree in the relevant field of study with a least of second class lower from a university recognized by the NOUN Senate. Holders of a lower classification who have a minimum of 2 years of relevant post-qualification experience OR a Postgraduate Diploma in a related field of study from a recognized university OR a Higher National Diploma with a minimum of Upper Credit in the relevant field of study may be considered on an individual basis. Candidates who hold a membership certificate from one of the required professional organizations are eligible to apply for the Master of Business Administration (MBA) program.
- Candidates for the Doctor of Philosophy Degree programs must have a master’s degree in a relevant subject of study from a recognized university by the Senate of the NOUN with a minimum score average of not less than 60% or a cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.5 on a 5-point scale.
University of Lagos (UNILAG)
The University of Lagos was established in 1962. It has three campuses in Yaba and Surulere at the moment. Two of its campuses are in Yaba (the main campus in Akoka and the newly created campus at the former School of Radiography), but its College of Medicine is in Surulere’s Idi-Araba. The fact that all three campuses are on the Lagos mainland is remarkable. Its main campus, located on 802 acres of land in Akoka, Yaba, is mostly encircled by a picturesque view of the Lagos lagoon.
Arts, Basic Medical Sciences, Business Administration, Clinical Sciences, Dental Sciences, Education, Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Law, Pharmacy, Science, and Social Sciences are among the twelve faculties at the University of Lagos. Admission Requirements for University of Lagos (UNILAG)
The Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and Direct Entry are the only ways to get into FULL-TIME undergraduate programs (DE).
- The candidate must have five (5) O’Level credits or its equivalent, as determined by the department of interest.
- Candidates must score at least 200 points in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), and the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board must have given the candidate’s information to the University of Lagos (JAMB).
- The candidate must take the University’s POST-UTME Exam and get the specified minimum score.
- ONLY FULL-TIME admission to undergraduate programs is processed by the University Admissions Office. Other University organs handle admission to other programs such as Foundation, Diploma, Distance Learning Institute (DLI), Post-graduate, and evening programs.
- By the 31st day of OCTOBER in the year of admission, the candidate must have reached the age of SIXTEEN (16).

Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH)
The Lagos State College of Science and Technology (previously known as Lagos State Polytechnic) was created on June 1, 1977, with the publication of Lagos State Edict No. 1 of 1978. Accountancy and Finance, Management and Business Studies, Insurance, Secretarial Studies, and Basic Studies were the five departments that started classes in January 1978 at a temporary site (currently the Isolo Campus). Later, they began offering GCE ‘A’ Level Arts and Sciences courses.
The School of Agriculture in Ikorodu was merged with the Institution on August 1, 1978, and it constituted the nucleus of the current permanent facility at Ikorodu. After ten years of operation, in 1988, The institution’s name was changed from Lagos State College of Science and Technology (LACOSTEC) to Lagos State Polytechnic by the Lagos State Government (LASPOTECH). Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu transformed the school into a university in 2021.

Caleb University, Lagos
On May 17, 2007, the Federal Government of Nigeria granted Caleb University, Imota, Lagos, a provisional license to operate as a private university.
The National Universities Commission approved the start of part-time programs at the Caleb Business School (CBS) in 2012, as well as the launch of the College of Postgraduate Studies (COPOS), with the MSc Degree in Architecture starting in March 2013.
The National Universities Commission (NUC) recognized the College of Education (COLED) in August 2018, and the NUC and the Council of Legal Education approved the College of Law in 2021.
