There are three universities in Kebbi State; 2 federal universities and a state university. Kebbi is one of the states in the northwest region of Nigeria. The state is the 22nd most populated state in Nigeria with a population of 4.4 million as at 2016. 

Apart from having 3 universities, Kebbi State also has a college of education and a federal polytechnic. However, for the sake of this article, we will be focusing on the universities in Kebbi State.

Federal University, Birnin Kebbi is a public university established by the then President of the federal republic of Nigeria, Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan,  on the 18th of February 2013. The university was established alongside those of Gasau and Gashua, in line with the policy to establish at least one federal university in states where they don’t have one. 

The federal university is situated in Birnin Kebbi, the capital city of Kebbi State, Nigeria. Federal University, Birnin Kebbi commenced academic activities for their first academic session in November 2014 with about 507 students and 102 staff. 

The university has two sites, a temporary takeoff site at Kalgo which houses the school for basic and remedial studies and female hostels and a permanent site at Unguwar Jeji which houses the major campus capacity buildings. The current vice chancellor of the university is Professor Bello Bala Shehu, a former provost of the college of health sciences.

Federal University of Agriculture, Zuru

Federal University of Agriculture, Zuru is a public university owned and run by the federal government of Nigeria. The university is located in Zuru, Kebbi, in the northern part of Nigeria. It was established in 2020 by the federal government of Nigeria, led by the administration of President Mohammadu Buhari. 

The university was formerly known as the College of Agriculture, Zuru. The current vice chancellor of Federal University of Agriculture, Zuru is Professor Musa Isiyaku Ahmed.

Kebbi State University of Science and Technology, Aliero

Kebbi State University of Science and Technology is a specialized state-owned university situated in Aliero, Kebbi, in the northern part of Nigeria. The university was established in 2006 by the Kebbi State Government, with a goal to generate quality engineers in Kebbi State, Nigeria and the world at large.  

The vice chancellor of Kebbi State University is Professor Bashar Ladan Aliero. The university is approved by the National Universities Commission and offers programs in science, agriculture and others.
