Introduction 

The Universities in Delta State are accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and these universities (whether federal, state and private owned) offer admission to all qualified  candidates annually. Among the list of Universities in Delta State, eight universities exist in Delta  State, of which two are federal Universities, one is a state University while five are private  Universities. 

Delta State was created from the then Bendel State on the 27th August 1991 by the then system of  General Ibrahim Babangida. Delta State is named after the delta area of the River Niger. Its capital  is Asaba. Warri is the greatest business city in the state. Other significant towns are Agbor, Ughelli,  Oleh, Ozoro, Oghara, Sapele, Koko, Burutu, Okpanam and Ogwashi-ukwu. Delta State can be  viewed as a miniature version of Nigeria, with different ethnic gatherings. 

Federal Universities in Delta State 

There are two (2) Federal Universities in Delta State, which are; 

Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun 

The Federal University of Petroleum Resources Effurun (FUPRE) in Delta State, Nigeria was  established and endorsed by the Federal Executive Council meeting of 14 March 2007 and  admitted its first set of students in 2008. The college was established under the Federal  Government of Nigeria drive to build a specialized University in the Niger Delta to deliver labor  and mastery for the oil and gas area. The National Universities Commission(NUC) endorsed  dividing of offices among the Petroleum Training Institute Effurun and Federal University of  Petroleum Resources Effurun until it moved to its permanent site on the advancement of its main  campus at Ugbomro, Uvwie Local Government Area in 2010. FUPRE is the first petroleum University in Africa.

Admission Requirements for Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun 

Getting admitted into Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun (FUPRE) is basically  under 2 entry methods which includes the UTME entry and the Direct Entry. 

Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun (FUPRE) admission requirements through UTME 
  • Candidates must have probably reached the age of 16. 
  • Candidates should have no less than 5 (five) “Cs (Credits)” grades in their O’ level result  (s). This should incorporate English Language, Mathematics and three different subjects  connected with their course of study.  
  • Candidates should score at least 200 for Engineering courses and 180 for Science courses  in JAMB UTME examination 
  • Candidates should accept FUPRE post UTME screening assessment and should perform  very well in the assessment (Depending on the course of study) 
  • Not more than one sitting result is acknowledged for entrance into the Federal University  of Petroleum Resources (FUPRE) 
  • Candidates should pick the right subject mix for their courses. 
  • Candidates should meet the specified cut-off marks for their courses to gain admission into  the University. 
Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun (FUPRE) admission requirements through Direct Entry

Nigerian Maritime University Okerenkoko, Delta State 

The Nigerian Maritime University (NMU), is owned and established by the Federal Government  of Nigeria, and is situated in Okerenkoko with its campus at Kurutie Warri South-West Local  Government Area of Delta State. The Nigerian Maritime University (NMU) has been accredited  by the National Universities Commission (NUC), Nigeria.

Delta State University Abraka 

The Delta State University, Abraka, known as “DELSU”, was established on the 28th of April,  1992 to provide university education to Deltans specifically and all who looked for a phenomenal  tertiary opportunity for growth. The University began as a Government Teacher Training College,  offering Grade II Certificate (TC II) before Nigeria acquired her freedom in 1960. It transformed  into a College of Education for the honor of the Nigerian Certificate of Education (NCE).
