Introduction to Universities In Akwa Ibom State

Whether you are an indigene of Akwa Ibom State or not, it will be in your best interest to know all the accredited universities in Akwa Ibom State, especially if you have intentions to begin your tertiary education in the state.

Akwa Ibom state is an oil rich state, in the south-south region of Nigeria. The state’s major language is Ibibio, but they also have other languages in some parts of the state.

The state boasts of great infrastructures and other social amenities, including universities. It is seen as a peaceful state, and thus provides a conducive environment for learning.

There is a total of about 5 universities in Akwa Ibom state, including a federal university, a state university, and 3 private universities. We will be looking at each of these universities and in this article, along with the programs and courses offered.

University of Uyo, Uyo

The University of Uyo is the only federal university in Akwa Ibom state. It is a federal university in the sense that the university is established and sponsored by the federal government of Nigeria.

The school is situated in Uyo, the capital city of Akwa Ibom state. It has various campuses in the capital city, including a main campus at Nwaiba road, a town campus at Ikpa road, an annex campus at Ikpa road, and a teaching hospital at Abak road. The University of Uyo also has another campus at Ediene Abak, Abak, for Pre-Degree and JUPEB students. The University of Uyo would be the first amongst the list of universities in Akwa Ibom state we would look at.

It was previously known as the University of Cross River State. It was established as a federal university in 1991, where the name was changed to University of Uyo, by the federal government. The current vice chancellor of the institution is Professor Nyaudoh Ndaeyo.

University of Uyo School Fees Range

The school fees for undergraduates in the university of uyo are slightly different in each faculty. However, for a first year undergraduate of the university, the grand school fees (excluding accommodation) is about 70,000 naira.

For subsequent levels, the school fees are slightly different.

The university of Uyo has 12 faculties and a college of health sciences. The faculties include:

Programs offered in University of Uyo

University of Uyo offers an undergraduate program, post graduate school, school of continuing education, and school of basic studies.

Admission into their undergraduate programs are done either through the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), or direct entry.

The postgraduate school of the institution runs about 94 Ph.D. and 108 master’s programs across the 12 faculties. 

Akwa Ibom State University 

The Akwa Ibom State University is a state-owned university established by the Akwa Ibom state government. The university is a multi-campus institution with its main campus located at Ikot Akpanadem, Mkpat Enin Local Government Area. The other campus is located in Obio Akpa, Oruk Anam Local Government Area. The Akwa Ibom state University would be the second on the list of universities in Akwa Ibom state we would share details about.

Akwa Ibom State University started academic activities in the 2010/2011 academic year. The current vice chancellor of the university is Professor Nse Essien, who started his tenure in 2020. 

Akwa Ibom State University School Fees Range 

The grand total of the fees paid by undergraduates in the Akwa Ibom State University is different for indigenes and non indigenes of the state. For indigenes of the state, they are expected to pay 53,000 per session, while non indigenes are expected to pay 73,000 per session.

The university has about 38 departments in 8 faculties. The faculties include:

Programs offered in Akwa Ibom State University 

The Akwa Ibom State University offers about 45 undergraduate programs and 78 postgraduate programs.

Admission to their undergraduate programs can either be through the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination or Direct Entry. UTME candidates are expected to have a minimum of 5 credits passes in SSCE or any other results, and a minimum cut off mark of 140.

Along with the expected credit passes, direct entry applicants should have either A’ levels, OND, or NCE in relevant subject areas, and an expected score in the direct entry screening exercise. 

The postgraduate programs include different master’s programs, post graduate diploma, and PH.D.  

Obong University, Obong Ntak

 Obong University is a faith based institution of learning, located in Obong Ntak, in Akwa Ibom. The private university was founded in 2007, and it is affiliated with the Church of Christ. Rivergate Church of Christ in Madison, Tennessee is the sponsoring congregation of the school. The Obong university would be the third on the list of universities in Akwa Ibom state

The school claims to empower students to improve their competence and independence in ways that prepare them to be of benefit to the society and God’s kingdom. 

The current vice chancellor of the university is Professor Udoudo Moses Ekanemesang, a professor of biochemistry.

Obong University School Fees Range

Depending on the departments, the tuition fees range from 90,000 naira to 200,000 naira. Other charges include departmental, medical, and library fees, which sum up to a total of 100,000 naira.

The university has about 16 departments and 4 faculties. The faculties include:

Programs offered in Obong University

Obong University offers undergraduate programs. To get admitted into their undergraduate program, you must either apply through UTME or direct entry.

Obong University also offers students with Joint Universities Preliminary Examination Board (JUPEB).

Ritman University, Ikot Ekpene

Ritman University is a private university located in Umuahia Road, Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom. The privately owned university was founded by Emmanuel Ibok Essien, a former Senator who represented the North West Senatorial District of Akwa Ibom State. The Ritman university is the fourth on the list of universities in Akwa Ibom state.

Ritman University was accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC) on March 5th, 2015, and commenced academic activities on the 23rd of November, 2015.

The university allegedly has about 1000 students in all their faculties. The current vice chancellor of the university is Professor Celestine Ntuen.

Ritman University School Fees Range

The total fees for a first year student of this university is about 350,000 naira, with the tuition fees being 250,000 naira and incidental fees (exclusive for first year students) being 100,000 naira. 

Other of their fees include accommodation fees and meal plan.

Faculties and Departments in Ritman University. 

Ritman University has about 20 departments in 3 faculties. These faculties include:

●     Faculty of Humanities.

Programs offered in Ritman University / Admission Process

Ritman University offers applicants entry into their undergraduate programs. The university alleges that admission into their undergraduate program is competitive. Applicants from UTME and Direct Entry are expected to apply online on the university’s website and also take the screening exercise.

They also offer a Joint Universities Preliminary Examination Board program.

Topfaith University, Mkpatak

 Topfaith University is a privately owned university which was allegedly created out of passion for excellence in university education within the context of functional research, global trends, entrepreneurship, and life skills. The Topfaith university is the fifth university on the list of universities in Akwa Ibom state.

 The university is located in Mkpatak in Akwa Ibom, and was established by the Thomas Abraham Foundation, to perpetuate the principles of Thomas Abraham who was a Deacon of Faith Tabernacle Congregation Church, Nigeria.

The current vice chancellor of the university is Professor Patrick James Ebewo.

Top Faith School Fees Range

Depending on the faculty, the total fees for undergraduates of Topfaith University ranges from N 1.6 Million to N 1.8 Million. The fees include the tuition, accommodation, feeding (3 meals per day), medical, ID cards, department and faculty dues, and others.

On admission, students are expected to pay a non refundable acceptance fee of N 50,000.

Topfaith University offers admission into their undergraduate program through the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board. Interested applicants must have a minimum of 5 credits (including English and Mathematics) in SSCE or any other equivalent examinations, and meet a certain cut off mark in JAMB.

For admission into the institution through direct entry, applicants are expected to have the minimum 5 credits in SSCE, as well possessing ND, HND or other equivalent degree.
